B. Siting describe proposed moss garden location:
1. Site dimensions, garden shape and topography.
2. Are there any buildings, obstructions or terrain features immediately adjacent to
proposed site that will impact rainfall or sunlight on the moss garden? If so describe
them? (Example: moss garden will be located on the north side of administration
building immediately adjacent to building)
3. What companion plants and garden features, i.e. statuary, rocks, organic material etc, will
be used? If rocks please note kind; i.e. granite, quartz, sandstone, limestone. If statuary
please note composition; cement or stone and if stone what kind?
4. Will there be paths through the garden and if so what material?
5. Are any large glass windows located near proposed moss garden. If so please give
direction with respect to moss garden and size of windows(s).
6. Physical Location: city and state.
C. Light Source describe:
Indirect light or filtered or dappled sunlight locations are best.
Will the proposed moss garden location receive any direct sunlight during the summer day. If so for how long approximately and at what times of day approximately?
If moss garden will be in deep shade what is maximum light (rough approximation) level
(measured in flux or foot candles) during a cloudless summer day?
If tree canopy shades the garden is it only one canopy or is there another higher canopy?
Please list tree species. Note moss gardens do not do well under pine trees.
D. What will be substrate? Describe.
If soil:
What is pH?
What is soil type: clay, loam or sand?
If soil ph requires adjustment do you have a preferred method and if so what?
If you are amending soil pH what date did you apply pH amendments. What date(s) did you retest pH
and what were the pH reading(s) on those(that) date?
If artificial mat system:
What is garden topography; flat or sloping or combination? For sloping areas give approximate gradient?
If there are any depressions of more than one inch depth then what is depth and approximate area of
depression(s)?
E. Rainfall and water runoff
Is rainfall adequate in that location or will adjacent buildings/obstructions severely reduce rainfall and if
so from what directions?
Does water from any roof drain towards the moss garden?
If so what is roofing material used and what is material used for gutters and downspouts?
F. What is air quality of proposed moss garden area?
Note proximity to highways, factories, utility power generators and agricultural fields.
NOTE: I will need pictures of proposed site and pictures from all four directions and labeled as facing
N, E, S and W. If trees are above or immediately adjacent to garden I will need a picture(s) of these as well.
If the pictures are sent email please send as 800 X 600 jpg files.
